Are Some Medicines Off-Limits During Pregnancy?

Medically reviewed by: Elana Pearl Ben-Joseph, MD

I just found out that I'm pregnant. Are there some medicines I can't take now?

Women should steer clear of many medicines during pregnancy. Even common over-the-counter (OTC) medicines might be off-limits because of possible effects on a developing baby. Some prescription medicines also can cause problems, as can herbal remedies and supplements.

Talk with your doctor:

  • If you already take medicine for a health condition. He or she can talk with you about the pros and cons of taking it during pregnancy.
  • Before taking any medicines, including prescriptions, OTC medicines, herbal remedies, and supplements. You'll want to be sure they're OK during pregnancy, even if they seem like no big deal.

Tell any health care provider that you see that you're pregnant.
